What is the Academy of Strings?

  • The Academy of strings is a non-profit string orchestra founded in 1996. It provides at least 2 free concerts to the public.
  • Its Motto - "Let's share the joy of music, whether through playing music, or by listening to it.
 
What are its aims?
  • To provide high standard musical activities to string players of any age (those who have left school but still want to keep up their playing are especially welcome.)
  • To provide musical entertainment to the community.
 
How does it achieve its aims?
  • Through rehearsals from February to September (approx. 8 months, with 2 short term breaks), on Saturdays, from 4:00 to 6:00, at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, 13 Reeves Road, Pakuranga;
  • Providing 2 to 3 concerts, with additional performing opportunities (decided by availability of members)
 
How much does it cost to become a member?
  • $150 for the whole year.
  • Free instrumental lessons on application.
  • Reduced enrolment fee on application.
 
Where does the money go to?
  • Purchasing music and making copies,
  • Renting rehearsal and concert venues,
  • Tutor's fees, and
  • Advertising.
  • (Statements of Income and Expenditure are open to all members.)
 
How can I become a member?
  • All accomplished string players with Grade 6 or equivalent are welcome.
  • Admission by audition.
